this year emilie decided that she wanted to have a double party with karalese, her good friend who’s birthday is the day before hers. it was time for a tea party.
we invited a few girls from church and then each girl invited a few from school. saturday afternoon, little ladies, all dressed up, began arriving at the ‘dillonhouse tea room’. there was tchaikovsky softly playing in the background, and the table was set with mamsie’s tea cups and silver. the maids, jolyn and i, led them first to the drawing room for an etiquette lesson. we discussed everything from the proper way to hold one’s tea cup and how to stir to what to do with one’s gloves during tea. the ladies were quiet and completely attentive.
they were then escorted to the tea room. a three course high tea followed with strawberry tea, scones, (with lemon curd and devonshire cream), tea sandwiches, fruit and a finale of cake. they took their cream and sugar (mostly 2 or more lumps at a time) with elegant grace…all except for elise, who spilled hers twice (we decided she was a lady-in-training).
we returned to the drawing room for a little practice in propriety. we had an exercise to see who could gracefully balance a book on her head without touching. morgan was the hands down (literally) winner. we then moved to an orderly game of ‘hot tea cup’, similar to ‘hot potato’.
gifts followed. the hostesses were pleased beyond measure. it was a brillant success indeed.
